8mm Film Collection8mm film revolutionised home moviemaking after it was introduced in 1932 by the Eastman Kodak Company. After April 1965 when Kodak introduced the vastly improved Super 8 format, its popularity exploded. These days home moviemaking has moved on into the realm of digital video, but 8mm was never just about amateur movies. Before the invention of the video recorder, the only (economical) way of re-watching your favourite films outside the cinema was to buy them on 8mm. Today there's a huge market for old 8mm films - and new prints are still being released by specialist companies such as Derann. In comparison to 16mm or 35mm collecting, its not an expensive hobby either, as long as you're prepared to root through charity shops and jumble sales in the search of celluloid. While DVD provides near-perfect picture and sound quality, there's nothing quite like sitting in a darkened room watching images complete with real film grain projected onto a large screen. I currently own a couple of projectors.
